The United States government has many departments and agencies. This is an attempt to list all the major groups as of 2024.
Government bureaus come into being when the work becomes too much for a government group to handle. The best rule-making approach would be to localize the effort toward enforceable actions, but that would require relinquishing power, which is at least somewhat against human nature.
The result is the following wall of specializations, many of them operated by technically qualified but often holistically bankrupt workers.
It’s worth noting that there are also state-based variations of many of these services, proportional to that state government’s size.
Some departments have become gigantic conglomerations of prior organizations, with no clear mission anymore.
- Categorizing them toward a single purpose is now no longer possible.
- In many ways, each mega-department is a splintered power structure, similar to corporate power.
- However, unlike corporate power’s economic constraints that mandate specialization, government entities tend to sprawl into redundant structures until a bill consolidates the power under a new agency.
